"Gold Rush", is a brand new 4-H project which will give youth the chance to raise goldfish in an aquarium. For the next six months youth will care for their goldfish, and will have the experience and excitement of helping an animal grow.

County youth that attended the kick off field day were from Jackson, Liberty, Gadsden, Wakulla and Calhoun. Twenty-eight aquariums were given to youth. Twenty-nine  youth, 8 adults, one program assistant, and two county extension agents attended the field day. At the field day the youth received information and tips for setting up the aquarium, stocking and taking care of their fish, testing water quality, and feeding their fish.

The youth will have the opportunity to show the goldfish at county and district events and get the chance to take home a ribbon for "Best of Show"! The project fee is only $30 as a result of receiving the B.J. Allen scholarship and sponsorship from other companies and aquaculture groups.

All the necessary supplies will be supplied to the youth. The University of Florida Mitchell Aquaculture Farm faculty gathered all the supplies and wrote the "Gold Rush" publication for the project and taught the sessions for the field day. Click here to see those that help teach.
